Sized around the furniture, not the leftover lawn
The most common mistake we get called out to fix is a patio that was built to fit a corner rather than to fit a table. A six-seat dining set plus chairs pulled out needs more room than most people picture, and a fire pit needs clear space on every side.
We lay the whole thing out on the ground with paint and stakes before a shovel goes in, so you can walk it, sit in it and tell us it needs another two feet.
Fire pits, seat walls and kitchens
Most of our patios end up with something built into them. A gas or wood fire pit extends the season by a couple of months on either end. A seat wall around the edge means eight people fit without dragging chairs out. A grill island keeps the cook in the conversation.
These are much cheaper to build while the base is already open than to add on two years later, so it is worth deciding now even if you build in stages.
Drainage, slope and the back door
Every patio we build is pitched away from the house, usually about a quarter inch per foot — enough to move water, not enough for your glass to slide off the table. Where a patio sits below grade or against a walk-out basement we add a channel drain or a French line tied to daylight.
We also set finish height correctly against door thresholds so you are not stepping down onto a lip or trapping snowmelt against the siding.
