Walls fail from water, not weight
Hydrostatic pressure behind a wall is what pushes it over. Every wall we build gets clean drainage rock behind the block, a perforated drain line at the base running to daylight, and geotextile separating aggregate from native soil so the drainage does not silt up.
Above a certain height we add geogrid tied back into compacted fill, which turns the soil mass itself into part of the structure. Where the height or the load calls for it, we bring in a stamped engineered design and build to it.
Block, stone or boulder
Segmental block is the workhorse — consistent, cost-effective, available in colours that suit most Spokane homes, and it handles curves and corners cleanly. Quarried natural stone costs more and takes longer but looks like it was always there. Basalt boulders suit big rural slopes and read naturally against pine and native grasses.

Terracing, steps and planting
On steeper ground two or three shorter walls often beat one tall one: less engineering, less cost, and you get usable planting shelves instead of a blank face. Steps can be built into the run so the upper yard is actually reachable, and cap units double as seating along a patio edge.
