The Inland Northwest asks a lot of a plant: dry hot summers, cold snaps, and soil that ranges from basalt rubble to heavy clay depending on which side of the road you are on. We plant material that handles it — ornamental grasses, hardy shrubs, native and drought-tolerant perennials — rather than whatever looked good in the nursery that week.
The result is a yard that fills in over two or three seasons and needs less water and less replacing every spring.

Because we build the hardscape too, the patio, the beds, the lighting and the irrigation get planned together. Sleeves go under the paving before it is laid. Lighting conduit is buried while the trench is already open. Heads are placed so they water plants instead of the new stonework.
That coordination is where most of the savings and almost all of the frustration avoided actually comes from.
